Could that light be a bit less bright?

At MVCC one of our core values is respecting diverse viewpoints, listening to others and working to resolve disagreements with the goal of building a common vision. Talking to neighbors about their outdoor lighting can present a good opportunity for respectful dialogue that works towards a solution. Dark Sky International has compiled some helpful advice for talking to your neighbors about lighting which we’ve summarized below.

To begin with, it’s helpful if you’ve already developed a relationship with your neighbors so your first encounter isn’t just about a problem you have. Don’t begin with an accusation, begin with a question: “Can we talk about your outdoor lighting?” If they are open to discussion, move forward. Recognize that your neighbor may not even realize that their unshielded lighting is shining on your property or your house, wasting energy, money and potentially creating a safety hazard. Be prepared to listen to their concerns as many people feel that more light makes them safer even though there is no conclusive evidence that this is true. Listen to their reasons for having the light and then respectfully offer your concerns. If they are open to addressing the problem, you can offer a few solutions. One of the easiest solutions is turning the lights off. Other solutions include shielded fixtures, motion sensors, timers, and lights that are less bright. Be prepared to help develop, select and implement the solutions. And remember that getting angry or threatening legal action will always be counterproductive and will create a strained relationship between you and your neighbor that will be difficult to overcome. Finally, make sure you lead by example by implementing your own dark sky friendly lighting! and your own home implements dark sky compliant lighting.
