Clean Air and Dark Skies

Clean Air

Clean Air Methow (CAM) is a program of MVCC that seeks to create a sustainably clean airshed and “breathing room” for everybody. The Methow and Okanogan valleys consistently experience some of the worst air quality in the state. In the summer, frequent and severe wildfires contribute to a 5th season–smoke season–that can be counted on nearly every year. In the fall and spring, widespread residential and silvicultural burning contributes to deteriorating air quality. And in the winter the persistent use of old, smoky woodstoves and the presence of an inversion, traps smoke close to the valley floors. Clean Air Methow works to improve the county’s air quality and protect the health of residents, especially those who are the most vulnerable and underserved.

Our Woodsmoke Reduction Program, funded by the Washington State Department of Ecology has exchanged over 95 old smoky woodstoves since 2019 for new, EPA-certified stoves and highly efficient heat pumps. If you a homeowner who would like to learn more or apply to this program, we encourage you to reach out to dana@mvcitizens.org.

Over the years we have found hosts for over 35 low-cost Purple Air, air quality sensors. This now extensive network of sensors helps residents make informed decisions about their exposure to smoke by keeping track of current air quality at AirNow.gov and WA Smoke Blog

Dark Skies

Our newest program, Methow Dark Sky Coalition, works to keep our night skies free of unnecessary light pollution.  We advocate for dark skies policies, organize star parties, educate about the value of dark skies and help research lighting alternatives for homeowners and businesses. Visit the Methow Dark Sky Coalition page to learn more and get involved.
