On February 5th and 6th, MVCC Programs Director, Lorah Super, and two students from the Independent Learning Center (ILC), Georgie and Paige, traveled to Olympia to meet with our legislators. The students lobbied in support of SB 5189 which would fully fund competency-based internships outside the classroom. They also sat in on a meeting with Commissioner of Public Lands, Dave Upthegrove, and met with 7th District Representative, Andrew Engell.
Georgie reflected on the experience:
“In addition to obtaining valuable information on conservation efforts, environmental lobbying, fire resiliency, and current issues, I also was given valuable experience in the professional and political world, and what it means to work with like-minded individuals who share similar passions of helping preserve our natural world, and the sensitive ecological and biological systems that come with it.”
Just as these students were lobbying at the Capitol we held an initial Climate Club meeting at Liberty Bell High School. It turns out Climate Club is cool! Over 30 students showed up to the meeting! We’re excited to harness the energy and enthusiasm of our youth and we are eager to plan our next visit to Olympia!
