A gift of appreciated securities provides significant benefits, including an immediate charitable deduction for the full market value of the stock and avoidance of capital gains taxes that would normally be due upon sale.
Benefits:
- You receive credit and an immediate tax deduction for the fair market value of your stock gift on the date it was transferred to Methow Valley Citizens Council. (Consult your tax advisor regarding limitations on deductions for gifts of securities held for less than one year.)
- You pay no capital gains tax on the donated stock.
- Your gift of stock or mutual funds can also be used to fund a charitable gift annuity [link to this in the Legacy page] or charitable remainder trust [link to this in Legacy page], which can provide you with income for life.
Transfers of stocks or mutual funds typically take a few business days. Mutual fund transfers from direct fund brokers can be expedited if we have notification about an upcoming gift. Please send notifications to jasmine@mvcitizens.org.

This is for MVCC supporters aged 70-½ or older. At this age, you must begin taking required minimum distributions if you have a traditional IRA, even if you don’t want or need the money. Instead of taking a disbursement and paying taxes on these funds, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA is worth considering. You can make an immediate impact!
Benefits:
- Your gift counts toward your annual required minimum distribution
- Your gift lowers your taxable income
Each financial institution has its own process for initiating a QCD, so follow their instructions. and email at jasmine@mvcitizens.org or call (509) 997-0888 x3 for additional information about how your gift will benefit MVCC.
Here’s how it works:
- Your gift must be transferred directly from your IRA account to Methow Valley Citizens Council.
- Your gift is a transfer of funds from your IRA to Methow Valley Citizens Council, so while you do not receive a charitable deduction, it does not create taxable income for you.
- You may transfer up to a total of $105,000 per year (individual) or $210,000 (married couple).
- If you are required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA, your gift can count towards it, but your gift is not limited to your RMD. If you are using a checkbook issued by your IRA administrator to make your gift, please send your gift as early as possible to ensure that it qualifies for a distribution in the current year.
