MVCC and other local organizations have been closely monitoring the North Central ATV Club’s proposal to open almost 50 miles of county roads in the Methow Valley to wheeled all-terrain vehicles (WATVs). Since the ATV Club proposed the opening of road last month for WATVs the County has not progressed any farther on the public process they must follow to approve the proposal. The county commissioners will first meet with affected public agencies including WDFW, DNR, BLM, USFS and the Towns of Pateros, Winthrop and Twisp to hear their thoughts and concerns. After this consultation a public hearing will be held. To be approved the proposal also has to go through a robust State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) process. This process includes the collection of public written comments. If this ATV proposal does move forward there will be two opportunities to provide comments.
Before the public process starts, if you have concerns about allowing ATVs on county roads or would be adversely affected by the proposal, we encourage you to write to your county commissioner, Andy Hover or draft an op-ed. Find background on the ATV issue and details of how to take action here.
