Okanogan County is finalizing its Comprehensive Plan – a detailed master plan for zoning and growth. It includes projections for population growth, land use policies, water management, guidelines for residential and commercial development, maintenance of open spaces, and more. On Feb 4th, the County released a new draft of the Comp Plan and an addendum to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) analyzing four separate alternatives, including the Citizens’ Alternative (Alternative 4).
Okanogan County has been operating under a Comprehensive Plan adopted in 2014 – the first complete revision in 50 years. MVCC successfully challenged that document in court for failing to address wildfire preparedness, protections for agriculture, and for not fully considering impacts on water resources and quality. We are hopeful that the new draft 2021 Comprehensive Plan will address these issues.
As the Methow Valley, and other areas in the County, face immense pressure from growth, it’s more important than ever that we have an effective and visionary Comp Plan in place to protect our region’s natural environment and rural character. MVCC is busy reviewing and evaluating the new draft and EIS, and will be releasing its Comment Guide in the coming days. Stay tuned!
