Over 130 comments were submitted on the Midnight Restoration Project Environmental Impact Statement last month. Reviewing the public’s comments, many reflected a desire for a different approach to forest restoration than the Methow Valley Ranger District is currently proposing. With federal Infrastructure funds available to help pay for the Project there seems to be broad consensus that the Project should be centered around restoration objectives. This means leaving the large trees standing, protecting valuable and rare habitat, and avoiding logging on steep slopes. It also means not using the threat of a worst-case scenario fire as a reason to take a heavy-handed approach.
We continue to support many aspects of the project including the thinning of small and medium trees coupled with prescribed burning, road decommissioning and aquatic restoration. In working to raise a community voice, we will continue to push for a Project that will benefit our forest and community. We will keep you informed on the latest developments!
