After considering public comment, WDFW will close low elevation areas to protect valuable winter forage from December 15-March 31st. Much of the Methow Wildlife Area was purchased to protect winter range for Washington’s largest migratory mule deer herd which has been declining in recent years. For more information about the closures read WDFW’s press release and their FAQ which explains the reasons behind the closures.
The temporary closure was broadly supported by the Wildlife Area Advisory Committee, which MVCC is a part of. A majority of survey respondents from the public also supported the closure. After public comment, WDFW has shortened the closure by two weeks in the spring. About 12,000 acres of WDFW land will remain open for winter recreation. You can find a map of the closures here.
