In 1976 a concerned group of Methow Valley residents organized to oppose the development of a Whistler-sized ski resort in Mazama that would have fundamentally changed what the Methow Valley looks like. MVCC took the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The ski resort was never built.
In 2014 a Canadian mining company filed a permit for an industrial scale copper mine on Flagg Mountain above the Methow Valley. MVCC led a broad coalition of organizations and businesses to protect the Methow watershed.
The Methow Headwaters were protected from mining forever.
And then there’s all the unglamorous essential work: fighting for minimum lot sizes, advocating for the protection of the Methow Instream Flow Rule and holding Okanogan County to a high standard on their Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code.
All this has shaped how the Methow looks today.
This year we’ll be looking back at what we have come together to accomplish and looking forward to how we can raise a strong community voice to protect and nurture this place into the future. As the Methow and Okanogan grow and we face the challenges of a rapidly shifting climate, coming together to speak up for the place we love will be more important than ever. We hope you’ll join us this year in celebrating and committing to the future of this place we love.
