As we’ve seen in the last few weeks, wildfires can start suddenly and grow quickly in these dry conditions, especially when the winds pick up. As we head into the heart of our fire season, here’s a few steps we can all take to make sure we’re preventing wildfire starts:
Report any Campfires or Wildfire Starts: We’re now in a total burn ban, both on private land and public Forest Service land. Any campfires that are seen burning should be extinguished and reported, either to the Forest Service, 509-996-4000, or to 911. If you see a new wildfire start, report it to 911 immediately.
Avoid Parking in Tall, Dry Grass: Hot engines and exhaust can readily start fires in these conditions.
Make sure your Home is Wildfire Ready: Check out the “Be Ember Smart” graphic Fire District 6 has on their website to help you make sure your home is prepared for wildfire.
